Disadvantages: Stubborn

I am writing this review as an owner of an almost 3 year old English bull terrier.

I first decided to get an English bull terrier after hearing all the stories about my bull terrier that passed away when I was 1 years old. I obviously didn't remember him but I felt like I knew him due the amount of stories I heard about him. It seemed he made an impact on everybody he met.

We got our bull terrier when he was a couple of months old. He was gorgeous - all white with little brown ears. He had a black and white nose - most bull terriers noses go all black as they get older but ours just stayed half and half! He's now around 7 stone and all muscle..with a bit of a gut!

When they are puppies they chew and nip alot (like most puppies) and unfortunatley don't stop this until they are about 2 years old. They are also very excitable and eventually start calming down when they reach 2.

The first thing to mention is how loving, soppy and affectionate bull terriers are. It's awfully hard to tell them off when they look at you with those little sad and squinty piggy eyes! They love nothing more than cuddles. I can wake my bull terrier up from the deepest sleep by whispering 'cuddle?' and he'll drag himself across the room half asleep just to snuggle up with me. Bull terriers are very loyal and will do anything to impress you.

Bull terriers don't also seem to know how big they are. My boy regularly tries to curl up on my lap or perch up on the windowseal like a little cat. This is hard to achieve when you are 10 times bigger than a cat! They all seem to be clumsy and mildly distructive too. If there is something in his way he'll just barge through it or just walk it to it! They like to act dumb a lot of the time but they are really clever underneaath it all.

If you are thinking about getting a bull terrier you must be patient and have a lot of time for it. It does generally take about a hundred times to drum something into a bull terriers head, and even when you do they still try their luck. The word stubborn comes to mind. It's just something you have to learn to deal with. You'll probably lose a skirting board or table leg at some point too! It's hard work but well worth it.

My bull terrier thinks he's a human these days. Some people are strict with their dogs..I believe in a certain about of strict but I don't go overboard, they only have one life afterall. So my boy sleeps in my bed with me, he'll put his head on the pillow if he can get away with it. He likes to sit with me on the sofa or cruise around in the passenger seat of my car.

I also have a little girl that's almost 2 and her best friend is the dog. His best friend is her. They get on so well it's laughable. She can cuddle and kiss him, pull his ears, poke his face and tell him off and he just doesn't react at all. They follow each other round all the time, they're like a little double act. I have always been told how tollerent and great with children bull terriers are and I can deffiantley back up these claims. (this being said NO dog should ever be left alone with a child).

Unlike a lot of english bull terriers my dog is not deaf which means he makes a cracking guard dog. He hates that post man!!

One of a bull terriers favoruite things of all time is food. They will do pretty much anything for food. My little girl used to walk around with her food above her head! He's a lot better now though, he usually just waits for left overs. I think it's actually classed as on obsession! It is good to use for training purposes though..

English bull terriers are typically white or brindle. If you have a white one you'll find little white hairs absolutley everywhere! If you're going to buy a pedigree from a breeder you are looking at around £800 but it's much kinder to rescue. Why not try www.bulliesinneed.info or dogs trust? English bull terriers also come in minitures which means the same behaviour and characteristics but in a slightly smaller package.

I could write all day but I'd better leave it here before I bore everyone.

So to sum it all up -if you want an adorable, affection, hilarious, family dog then a bull terrier is for you. It's tough but the rewards are great.

Summary: The best dog in the world!
