Advantages: Reliable / Consistant / Guard Dog & Companion
Disadvantages: Strong Animals / Vicious When Provoked
We have kept English Bull Terriers in our family for the past 16 years. My parents bought our first bull terrier when i was seven I have grown up with the animals and would like to think that i know them pretty well. It is clear to me that the so-called problems of vicious dogs, are ones which apply to any animal of any breed. As with any dog it makes sense to be sure that it is trained from an early age. training is the key to making sure your dog is well behaved. A lack of training acts only as a catalyst for a badly behaved dog. Moreover, the dog needs to be raised in a loving and caring environment. If you raise a dog in an environment where it is kicked and beaten all the time and it is forced to defend itself, then the dog is more likely show vicious tendencies. This is true of any breed. If another human came to beat you up, what would you do but defend yourself, and for a dog this means using its teeth. English Bull Terriers, which as everybody points out, are often confused with, Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, dobermans and others, are small but strong dogs, they have the ability in certain cases to jump over 2 metres in height. Considering the size of the dog, this is quite something. This is something that has to be considered if you have young kids because, when they get playful or boisterous they can sometimes be over powering with small kids. I remember when i was small, our dog used to chase after us and pull at our shoes, the only way to escape was to jump ontop of the couch!!!! Much to the shagrin of many of my visiting friends!!! Bull Terriers are also single-minded dogs, this means they work alone and it means that you have to let them know who is boss. From the outset, it helps if only one person trains the dog and gives orders, this means that, it knows who not to mess with when it comes face to face with its owner. These dogs arent stupid, you need to show them care and respect, bu
t when push comes to shove they need to know that you are boss and that you mean business. Over the past 16 or so years, i would say that we have not had any problems at all with our Bull Terriers, aside from when they were provoked, and that never was there an instance where they acted out of character. In the right environment an English Bull Terrier can be a wonderful friend and protector for the family,. Our first would never let anyone she didn't like into the house and more often than not, those she didn't ,ended up being dubious characters anyway. I would recommend this dog whole heartedly as any other dog, if it is going to be received into the right environment.
