Advantages: loving and loyal

Disadvantages: molts

After loosing my rotty to cancer back in august this year we were looking into getting another dog when i saw an advert on pre loved for a lady in our area who was getting rid of here bull mastiff due to changes in her job, the advert was very brief so we arranged to go and see the dog and was pleasantly surprised at what we heard about him. Henry the two and a half year old mastiff had been given a anti social behaviour order after attacking another dog in the street and the courts had ordered he be castrated and be musled at all times wholst out of the house, the lady had had him advertised for quite some time but due to his behavioural problems as she called them had had very little interest, well this may have put off others but not us, he was adorable looking and very kind natured towards us so we took him home with us and after all my previous dog had been just as bad when it came to other animals.

Henry has turned out to be a great pet, he is briliant with us and our children, he is very big built and weighs 12 stone, he is very gentle in nature. He eats quite a lot of dog food as you can imagine for his size but unlike my previous dog he is fantastic with human food, he doesnt beg for food and wont take anything that you dont give to him, the children can sit with him wholst eating without him trying to take the food off them. He is short haired and almost has a velvety feel to him which i have heard a lot of people say is great as they dont molt a lot so less hairs to clean up but in fact we have found that henry molts quite a lot and with him being such a light colour and our carpet being dark blue they are quite noticable. Henry loves nothing more than to lye next to your feet in the livingroom and even tryes to get on your lap on the settee as he loves to be cuddled so much but what he doesnt seem to realise is that he is so big he squashes you.

Despite his size henry doesnt need too much exercise and is worn out by just running around the garden so we dont have to stress about walking him all of the time,

Having such short hair and being a english breed means that they are very suceptable to the cold, henry hates going out side in the cold weather and loves nothing more than to curl up in front of the radiator so they definately are not out side dogs.

Henry is very protective of me and the children and barks at anyone who goes near to us which i think is a good thing.

Mastiffs make great loyal and protective pets.

Summary: a great family orientated pet

Henry sounds just like my dog :) I have a bullmastiff, he is 11 stone and is like a baby with his softness. Only one complaint- he snores way too loud haha x

Not a favourite breed of mine.

I really like these dogs, and have often thought about getting one, but decieded against it as they are not the most 'athletic' of breeds and I like to walk my dogs for a 2/3 hours a day :)
