Cats in General
Advantages: Intelligent, amusing and affectionate yet independant
Disadvantages: Prone to accidents
For as long as I can remember I have always had a fascination with cats. As a child I lived in a neighbourhood which had an abundance of feral cats and I would spend many hours feeding them, caring for them and striving to tame them.
One feral kitten in particular decided that he would come to live with us permanently. Cats indeed are often like that, you do not choose them, they choose you! We gave him a name, Sooty, in reference to his jet black fur, and gave him a loving home until he eventually passed away from old age. The rest of the feral cats and kittens were eventually rounded up by my neighbour and I and taken to the Cats Protection League in the hope that they too would find loving homes.
I grew up with three cats altogether, Sooty our adopted feral kitten, a kitten from my aunt's cat's litter and one of her subsequent litter. Only one remains at my parents' house to this day but I have very fond memories of them all.
It was as a young girl that I watched the classic film Lady and the Tramp in which there were a pair of cunning and mischievous Siamese cats. I told my mother that when I had a house of my own, I too would have a pair of Siamese. Lo and behold we now share our household with Charlie, a blue tabby point Siamese, and Lillie, a chocolate point Siamese, recently referred to my our neighbour as 'the Egyptian cats'!
Siamese cats are quite different in temperament and character to the usual cats I had become accustomed to. They can be possessive, jealous and protective yet very faithful, intelligent and affectionate. They are very dog-like in character, ours often enjoy a good game of fetch!
Cats in general make fantastic pets. They are independent, in particularly when allowed outdoors as ours have very recently been. They are playful and loving. From my experience I have found that male cats tend to be more confident and loving in comparison to female cats. Male cats will often approach you for attention and petting whereas female cats tend to be a little more choosey.
Cats generally require around two feeds per day, each with fresh water. Feeds should be made up of a dry food to keep their teeth and gums in good condition and a moist food for nutritional value and to ensure that they do not dehydrate. However there are now many complete foods available which offer both and may also be a little more cost effective.
Although they will regularly groom themselves, longer haired breeds of cats may need a little grooming from the owner. Cats are very clean animals by nature and bathing should not be needed other than in exceptional circumstances. Going back to my childhood, one of my cats came home covered in oil one day one day and needed to be bathed. Being an animal that generally dislikes water, he certainly made a fuss!
Cats are quite often prone to ear and eye infections. This can be prevented by using an ear and eye cleaner, both available from most pet stores, and very gently cleaning the area with soft cotton wool. To prevent any other illnesses cats should be registered with a vet and regularly immunised. This is not solely for the benefit of your cat but others it may come into contact with in the outside world.
Outdoor cats should wear a collar and identity tag in order to help find them should they get lost or for the owner to be found should an accident occur. Microchipping is also available whereby a small microchip is placed beneath the skin which when scanned by a vet provides vital information about the cat and owner.
In summary a cat owner should provide food and shelter, plenty of attention, a good level of care and help to prevent any illness. In return a cat will provide great company, lots of affection and plenty of amusement!
