Cats in General
Advantages: Easy to look after, affectionate,
Growing up I never had a cat, and was never that interested in getting one. I always thought the point to having a pet was for the companionship that they offer, and for the fun of playing with them - and the cats that I knew were all very independent and didn't seem to like human affection.
However when my partner and I decided we wanted a furry friend, a cat was the obvious answer. We lived in a large flat, but didn't think it was fair keeping a dog inside, plus as we both worked full time the dog would have been alone most of the day.
So we set off to the Cardonald Cat & Dog Home to see if they had any cats. In the cat house, most of the cats stayed away from the cages, too shy or frightened to come closer. Then one cat came up to the cage and brushed himself against the cage, trying to get our attention. And it worked. We fell in love with the black and white cat.
When the staff let us into the cage, he came straight over to us, rubbing himself against our legs and wanting attention. He was a fat, old cat, 11 years old was the best guess. When we learned that he was abandoned in a cardboard box at the gates of the home we instantly felt sorry for him, yet he wasn't the least bit shy or frightened.
A few days later when we got him home, he made himself at home straight away. He choose his own chair (a leather chair no less) but never caused any trouble in the house.
He's never been one for playing with toys, every night he'll do a 5 minute sprint around the house, but the rest of the day he's happy to just sit in his chair and watch the world go by.
Although he was never shy with us, he doesn't like crowds. Indeed last Christmas when we had the family round, Jynx somehow managed to shut himself in the wardrobe to keep himself safe. He's ok with people he knows, but if a stranger comes in, he'll go and hide.
Jynx must be the cuddliest cat in the world! Within minutes of me getting home from work he's over at my feet wanting attention. If I'm sitting watching TV, he'll come over and lie on my lap. When I go to bed, he'll either come in beside me or lie on the floor beside me. And if I say his name he'll come running, well waddling, over.
Jynx is rather overweight, but its not through overeating. He was fat when we got him, and we've had him on a diet ever since, nearly 3 years now, but he hardly eats. Due to his age, he doesn't do much exercise though I do try to get him to run about and play when I can.
With kids he's great. Even though he'll hide, once the kids track him down, he'll just lie there and let them play with him - never has he scratched or bite anyone.
Overall I would highly recommend a cat as a pet, they are easy to look after and can be affectionate.
Summary: A great pet
