Advantages: They are independant but also need your love and attention
Disadvantages: None
I will admit that I never liked cats when I grew up, I always had dogs as pets and thought cats didn't really do anything. You don't have to walk them or anything so they were "boring"!
I will also admit that I was wrong and I take it all back what I said about cats. When I moved in with my partner he had two cats and even though they were a bit older they still played and had fun. Over the weeks I started to see their different characters. With Hamish (the oldest of the two) coming through when you whislte him, he knows breakfast time is not when I get up to go to work but when my partner starts work (he works from home) and he knows dinner time is as soon as I walk in the house at night. The funniest thing about him is he will watch as you get off a seat (won't matter what seat in the house) and he will take it literally seconds before you sit back down and settle there, he is such a character.
The other cat was Tabs, I found it a lot more difficult to get on with her. She was very independant and was scared of absolutely everything. But in time when she started to trust me she would sleep beside me and jump up for fuss. She will play with a toy I bought with a red laser light. she will chase it round for hours and even try and climb the walls for it.
After happily living with the two cats for a while I decided it was time to get a kitten. We managed to get 2 black kittens in a matter of days, with my partner loving motorbikes the poor girls were named after bikes, we called them Yama (Yamaha) and Suki (Suzuki). There was three altogether but one had already gone to another home. So I took them home and I couldn't believe how cute two kittens were together and how funny it is watching them grow up and watch over each other. The little cat naps they would take and hiding in very strange places to sleep, (behind headboard in bedroom). They were very young when we got them and fed them on sardines with tomato sauce, now all they will eat is fish. They get bored of one kind and I have to find them something else. Their black coats are so shiny from all the fish. They are very independant and when they finally realised how to get out the cat flap I wouldn't see them for hours. Sometimes I thought the worst of it and would go out searching for them only to findthem snuggled up with the sheep at the farm along the road.
Once they got older and independant I longed for another kitten. Completely by accident I cam across a notice that had a kitten free to a good home. I went home and after talkign about it with James (my partner). We decided to go and have 'a look' at this kitten. 40 mile drive later and I fell completely in love. I walked into the lady's house and here was this little fluffy black and white kitten up to mischief!! Well when I say little he was actually bigger than Yama and Suki and he was only 12 weeks old.
We took him home and expected him to take a week or so to settle in, especially with the other cats. I was so wrong!! He got out of the cat carrier and settled into the chair like he had never lived anywhere else! And his name.....well to keep in with the Scottish theme of boys name already having Hamish we decided on Murray. He is my absolutely favourite cat in the world. (I know I shouldn't have favourites but....)
Murray is a very large cat. He is a fluffy cat and everyone that meets him say I should put him into cat shows as they've never met anythign like him. I'm just happy having him as a pet. It took him days to make his way out of the cat flap when he moved in. When I go for a walk along the road he decideds to follow me, if a car passes he'll lie down at the side of the road until it passes. He loves attention and will lie with you and watch tv. He settled in with the other cats but I always find him to be the one always causing trouble as if he owns the place, they all get on well but they will have toy fights where you see them tumble round the room together.
So five cats later and I'm happy, now beginning to realise that cats really are a good pet to have. With both me and James working all day it's good they go out themselves and are not stuck in all day. They love cuddles and will settle in besdie wou. We often find a line of cats on our bed on a Saturday morning in between us. I would recommend anyone to get a cat, they are so lovely and very funny animals.
Ok i'm not finished with my cats - one day I get a phone call. Murray is 6 months old and settled in wonderfully. I'm happy, my house is feeling like home and I can't wait to get home to see them all. In the door and I answer the phone. The owner of Suki and Yamas sister has died and there is no-one to look after the cats.
So off we go again with the cat carrier up to the rural farm in darkness with a tiny torch. We see a cat running into a rotten shed. She looked just like Yama and Suki. So we open the door to find her and take her home, then her mum appears too. I pick up her mum to put in the car and realise she is very skinny and not been looked after well but she is also very heavily pregnant!! James gets the third sister and realises that her teets are showing, a sign of her having kittens. so with the little torch we search and all of a sudden we see 5 little heads popping out from a shelf. One cat carrier but 7 cats!! We managed them home eventually and put them all in the spare bedroom. The third sister (now called Kawa after Kawasaki) was deathly thin. We managed to find the kittens homes when they were old enough. The smile on the faces of the kids and even the adults that took all the kittens was the highlight of my year. The mum is now called Tasha and she lives happily with James parents and one of her daughters. Her kittens were also re-homed to happy people!!
So my brood has no finally stopped growing. It is staying at 6. Kawa is fit and healthy and is the chubbiest of all cats. I don't think she will ever realise when to stop eating after her hard life in the shed with her kittens. Everytime I think of my cats I smile. My phone is full of pictures of the cats. People say they will start calling me the crazy cat lady but I don't mind because they really do make a house a home! (even if they do steal all the good seats)
Summary: I love everything about them (well apart from when they sleep on the bonnet of my car)
