Advantages: Affectionate, funny & great companions

Disadvantages: Worry when they're missing or poorly

I've looked after two cats now which you would describe as "my pet" and numerous others that just call by now and again.

The two of my own started out as my sister's but due to changing circumstances which were the first moving near to a busy road and the second due to a child being on the way I've ended up with them. For anybody who has never looked after a cat, they are completely different to what you imagine and all have their own personalities. They are great fun and vary between being affectionate one minute to aloof and stand-offish the next.

Our current cat is called Munchie (because of her fondness for the dried food) and because we inherited her from my sister who in turn was "chosen" by Munch before that, we're not quite sure how old she is. She's certainly over ten and is definately settling down in her advanced years. Not so much of the bird hunting and climbing fences and a bit more of the napping on a comfortable chair. In addition to her fondness for dried foods she now goes absolutely mad for milk, so much so that she has now sussed out that when you make a coffee you tend to use the milk. This means that as soon as the kettle goes on and the cups are out she's waiting by the fridge. As they say too much milk isn't good for cats we have to be careful not to overdoo it.

As well as Munchie we also have several cats that come to visit us, much to our cats disgust. Our main friend is a big ginger tom called Oscar who is a bit younger than ours and only really wants to get her to play which is not very successful apart from the occasional fight. There is also a new ginger and white one who has just started to call on us and, as anyone else who has befriended a cat knows, it takes a bit of time to get accepted by a cat you've just met. This isn't a bad thing with some people who like to harm cats out there.

The only downside, as with any pet, is the worry when they
are missing or poorly and the inevitable trips to the vets when they get older, but I still wouldn't be without one now.

I sympathise, sidneygee, my partner does not like cats, and was not too happy about inheritting my 2 when we moved in. A compromise is that they live in the conservatory, although I do sneak them in when he is at work!

Where did you acquire the Felix image, Mikeyb? I love it!!

Hi Mikeb. We are obviously on the same wavelength. Love their different characters. Even bro-in-law has fallen for their charms having got re-married at 50 with Carol ho is cat-dotty. Before that he thought they were 'disgusting', particulalrly when 'playing the banjo'. Had no soul. Has now been re-deamed and often tells me of antics of 'his puss'

Watch out for kidney problems with Munchies. Will she drink water ? I'll bet she won't allow you to con her with well-watered milk ? lol/rofl.

Sad I have to make doo with 'visiting pusses' ( Heather still thinks they are all fleabags ).
