Advantages: Lovely cat given a 2nd chance
Disadvantages: Occassional dead things presented as gifts
My 2 daughters had been asking for a cat since they could first say the word! I was very hesitant about getting one, I worried they weren't old enough to respect an animal sufficiently, and I certainly knew they would not do much looking...that would be left to me. I know many people get swept along with taking on a new pet, but I wanted to consider all aspects of what was invloved, the vets fees, who would care for the cat when we were away etc. Eventually we decided the time was right. We visited the PDSA who had just had a 3 month old kitten brought in, he was affectionate the moment I picked him up and purred more louder than any cat I have ever met...he snuggled into my arms and that was it...I was hooked! The tabby cat was very imaginatively named Tabby, by my daughters and has now been with us for 2 years. He has cost us lots of money in injections, micro chipping, baskets to sleep in and baskets to travel in, neturing etc but we don't mind. He is still as affectionate as ever, and even when he brings in live mice to play with, it's hard to stay cross with a cat with such a loud purr. Tabby is a common or garden moggie but he brings us as much pleasure as any pedigree cat, if you are thinking of getting an animal, try the PDSA and give an unwanted animal another chance of a good life.
