Advantages: Brilliant companion. Good around children. Not aggressive
Disadvantages: None
Since I was one year old, I have been brought up with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in my life with our first pet dog called Pebbles and now we have our second one as Pebbles sadly died, who is called Lucy. I find these dogs to be incredibly friendly, playful, fantastic with children, well behaved, housetrained and they also make fantastic companions.
Sadly, our pet dog Pebbles died after 13 years. However, that is quite a long life span for a Cavalier King Charles as they can quite often have bad hearts and she also had bad arthritis. Once Pebbles past away, we got Lucy. Lucy wasn't bought as a replacement for Pebbles but because we love Cavlalier King Charles' so much and missed having a pet dog around the house. We got Lucy when she was 8 weeks old and generally, you can buy these puppies after 6 weeks. The cost obviously depends on who is selling the puppy and whether it is a pedigree or not. I remember Lucy being roughly £200.
The life expectancy for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is roughly 10 years old. The first couple of years of their life is their growth stage, between 2 - 5 years they are considered as a young adult and by 6 - 8, it is considered the dog is middle aged and 8 years on is considered old age. Some people also get confused between a "King Charles Spaniel" and a "Cavalier King Charles Spaniel". However, there is a difference in the way that they look, although they do have a similar coat and they also have different characteristics and identities. Cavalier's also tend to weigh slightly more, have a different shaped head.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come Black and Tanned, Tricolour, Blenheim and Ruby. They are also happy, friendly and non-aggressive. They are not supposed to be shy, however, both of our dogs have been quite shy around unfamiliar people.
Our dog is a Blenheim which is a white coat with ginger / red looking patches over the body. I think she looks adorable! Her coat can get quite long and needs to be groomed and washed regularly to keep her looking healthy and feeling clean. I think if in the future when I have my own family and wish to get a dog, it will definitely be a Cavalier Kings Charles Spaniel. I have been brought up with this kind of dog all my life and they are the most loveable and adorable dogs you will get. They are good around children and are not aggressive. They are playful and a brilliant companion for older people who are on their own.
Summary: My favourite breed of dog

- 21/01/08 My brother-in-law's mum had one (Toby) who got to the ripe old age of 18!!! He was a lovely dog, with the sweetest nature. Last year he died quitely in his sleep in his basket, and we all still miss him now.
A really nice write-up about an absolutely lovely breed. |
