Advantages: easy care
Disadvantages: inital cost
We got our first chihuahua in February 2000. His name is Clyde and he is a beautiful red and white long-coat chihuhua. In December of the same year we got our second one. Dusty is a cream and white long-coat chihuahua. And ... now we're planning to get a third one. Chihuahuas are loving little dogs who like to cuddle and be with their owner. Their size makes them very easy to care for. Chihuahuas do not necessarily need to be taken for walks every day, since they can get sufficient exercise even in comparatively small spaces. On the other hand I have taken my two on 10 mile walks without a problem. (Quite apart from that you can always pick them up if they get tired.) They are also quite cheap to keep (although the initial cost of getting one is around £200 to £350). My chihuahuas eat dog food and a 5kg bag lasts about 3 to 4 weeks. They can be finicky eaters, but that is just a matter of being firm (and also trying various dog foods). Talking about being firm... It is a very important responsibility for any dog owner to train their pet to a standard which ensures that it and others do not come to harm. This also applies to small breeds, although a lot of people do not seem to regard this as necessary. No dount it is sometimes very difficult even heartbreaking to deny the little chap anything, but it will pay off in the end. Chihuahuas are very intelligent little creatures and they seem to know very well how to get away with things, (if you let them). All the chihuahuas I have come across like children very much. The problem between children and chihuahuas is not that the dog might hurt the child but rather the other way around. Children usually get very excited when they come across one and often chihuahua eyes and bones may get hurt in the process. It is therefore very important to keep an eye on proceedings when children under three and chihuahuas meet. I can only recommend the chihuahua as a pet to anyb
ody who needs companionship and love.

- 07/06/02 Not my first choice of breed. But a little dog with a big personality. I like the fact that you have trained them a little. So many small breeds are disliked because the owners have allowed them to be spoilt brats. That isn't the dogs' fault. Nice op.
