Disadvantages: they eat a LOT!

As a dog trainer i have trainer many dogs but none have been as remarkable as my own dobermann.
This breed of dog has suffered due to its past history as a guard dog, many people still asume that dobemanns are vicious and unpredictable.

Dobermanns are very sensitive dogs and bond strongly to their family, they are incredibly easy to house train and just as easy to do basic and competitive training with. They are desparate to learn and would do anything to please you. Despite their reputation more and more people are using dobermanns as visiting dogs in hospitals and care homes purly because of their good nature and gentle approach to the elderly and young.
My dobe will sit for hours with my disabled daughter and doesnt mind one bit when my 6 month old wants to pull at his ears and slobber all over him. He loves the attention.

In saying all this i would not recomend a dobe to everyone. They need a lot of exercise and a lot of feeding. They are incredibly intelligent dogs and if allowed will push their boundaries. A firm approach is needed when considering this breed.
These dogs are big, an adult male can weigh in at 90lbs and be 28 inches high, consider this if you live in a flat or do not have access to a garden. If dobes dont get good amounts of exercise thats 90lbs of dobe that is going to be prancing and bounding about in your home.
Some male dobes may not accept other dogs in the household. In saying this i have three boys who get on great, but beware if you have another male perhaps a female is better suited.

Dobes can be probe to certain conditions, Wobblers, Some cancers and in many cases acute growing pains as puppies, it is important to get your dobe (or any other dog) insured.

Overall i would recomend a doberman to anybody you has ample amounts of time to spent training and loving this dog, who can give it the exercise required and the affection they crave.
