When I was 14 (many moons ago), my Mum finally gave in and let us get a dog. We got a Golden Retriever and he was perfect. He hardly barked, he was loving and we could not have got a more perfect dog. But eventually he died at the age of 15 and it took many more years to persuade my Mum to get another dog. Well, actually, my Dad didn't persuade her, he just gave my sister money, told her what dog he wanted and told her to bring it in as though it was a surprise. My Dad wanted a flat-coated retriever (he couldn't get another golden retriever as it would have seemed as though he was replacing Casper and a flat coat seemed like a good alternative). The Flat Coated Retreiver has been described as the peter pan of the dog world as it never grows up! Depending on the breeding they can be a large dog. The are originally a cross breed from a NewFoundland (A huge hairy dog!) but over the years the breed has become a seperate and distinct breed with many qualities. Part from its childish behaviour it is a loyal companion. You will have to LOVE dogs to own one because they will rarely let you out of its sight and will follow you even to the bathroom!
