Advantages: Low Maintenance, Fantastic to Watch
Disadvantages: Hard to find a suitable amphibian sitter for holidays.
Whilst they might not be the most "loving" of pets, if you are looking for a relatively low maintenance animal for educational benefit, or maybe even to form part of an ornamental display, then Frogs could well be a good choice!
There are many different species of amphibian on our planet, and the amphibians are not doing well at present times in the wild, with species extinction readily happening. Most of the species in the exotic pet trade are still relatively common, but it's fantastic to think that we have such an extensive captive resevoir incase certain species did become exterpated in certain parts of the world. Amphibian populations are very fragile.
Frogs come in many shapes and sizes. There are big fat lumps which basically live to eat such as the pac man frog, which can consume an animal almost as big as itself. These are great fun to keep, however they don't really do a whole lot except eat.
There are many areboreal species and a good frog for a beginner looking in this department would be a Whites Tree Frog. If possible, go for a captive bred specimen rather than a farmed one. I do not think the trade in Wild Caught Amphibians is going to help with conservation efforts, despite maybe making them seem like a valuable resource to local people, but on the whole I would therefore advise against Wild Caught animals which are often riddled with parasites and do not adjust as well to captivity.
For more experienced frog boffins and once the beginner gets a bit of experience under his/her belt, there are some really spectacular high end jewels in the form of poison dart frogs. These make fantastic living room displays and can be kept in groups. A good beginner dart frog is the Black and Yellow Dendrobates leucomelas.
Make sure you do some extensive reserach before investing in an amphibian, google will bring up a plethora of information. In general, it's worth looking into the Exo Terra glass terrariums as frog habitats, as these can make lovely displays and are perfect for spraying lots of water in to.
Good luck with your amphibian adventure!
Summary: Frogs make great captives, though do your research first!
