Advantages: lovely to look at
Disadvantages: jekyll and hyde characters
Being the owner of a white German Shepherd I would say to anybody thinking of getting one forget it. Now don't get me wrong there lovely dogs to look at but their either very nervous or very aggressive.(I did'nt find this out until after purchasing mine, this is based on research that I have done, I have'nt been able to find anything to say otherwise). Mine unfortuanately is both nervous and aggressive. To look at him you would'nt think that butter would melt, but come near him and he goes berserk. On the good side he's a very protective dog and guards my house well. When you get one and find the problems outway the plusses of the dog then finding a home for them is impossible. I've tried the Police, the Army, the RAF, none of them want him because of the problems that come with them. I've also tried animal rescue centres who can't take him because of his aggressiveness, so now there are only two choices left, a visit to the vets or hope that with age he calms down. So like I said at the start don't get a white G/S/D. Now before people get on their high horse about me, I and my family love our dog but what if his aggressiveness gets the better of him and he attacks one of my kids or somebody elses, how am I going to live with that? could you?. Since i wrote this i've been advised to try herbal remedies, well i tried and they haven't worked. any more suggestions? UPDATE UPDATE Since writing this opinion my dog has got worse even after trying readers opinions, so now regrettably I'm giving it one more month to find him a home or I'm going to have to do the one thing that I didn't want to do. SECOND UPDATE First of all I would like to thank all those people who left advice for me. Sadly though I have had to have Kisa put to sleep as there was no alternative, a decision that I thiught long and hard about but could
not come up with any other option.

- 30/08/07 Re to you comment: Being the owner of a white German Shepherd I would say to anybody thinking of getting one forget it.
I have never read so much rubbish in all my life.
White German Shepherds make amazing pets and are such a joy to have around.
If you had a problem with your's being aggressive towards people he didnt know then it is probably your fault for NOT socialising him when he was a puppy.
The first few months in any dogs life should be socialisation and without this of couse he will be like you have said towards people he doesnt know because you havent taught him to be any different.
If you had taken him to a training class to socialise him you wouldnt have had this problem, so in my opinion the fault was yours not his.
It is so sad when people get a dog only to have this happen just because they havent bothered to do the right thing by them and it makes me so cross.
I have owned German Shepherds for 30 years and at this very moment I have 3 beautiful WHITE German Shepherds and everyone of them has a lovely nature and they all love people to make a fuss of them whether they know them or not, because they were all socialised from the moment they came into my house.
You have to socialise your dogs with people coming into your house as well as socialising them outside with Adults, Children and of course other dogs.
You have people on here saying they are sorry for you and you did the right thing etc etc but hey heres a newsflash for you, You didnt do the right thing at all, not from the moment you got your dog right up until the time to put him to sleep.
A dog is never to old to learn and the WHITE German Shepherds are very intelligent so instead of putting him to sleep if you had took him to training classes or took him to a behavourist your problems with your dog could have been solved.
The only thing that I am sorry about in reading your story is that I didnt find it at the time that you put it on as I could have took the dog off your hands for a few weeks and given him back to you a totally different dog who would have been a joy to have had around, but alas I am too late. |

- 07/01/04 You did the right thing having your dog destroyed as it would have been irresponsible to rehome it,however you are wrong to put all white shepherds into the same category. Yes they can be more nervous than other colours but they just need a knowledgable owner and good socialisation from a young age.My 2 year old white shepherd has the most beautiful nature and I would trust her with anyone.I have a black and tan shepherd puppy who is also showing signs of being nervous so it is not all about colour.
I had a golden cocker spaniel a few years ago which I had destroyed for the same reasons as your dog,but I would never dream of trying to say that all of the golden version of this breed are bad! |

- 04/02/03 so sad to hear the outcome for this story. I own a white GSD. She's a bitch, 4yrs old now and the softest thing on four legs. She's not brave, but everyone that meets her wants her. She was taken to a GSD training class from very early on and it was hard work but the time and effort has paid great rewards. I would trust her with my life. It is sad that there was none that could help you out of your situation, clubs vets friends other owners etc. But like the other comments, there are bad in all walks of life, and some would argue we are the worst of all!!!.
Don't let this experience put you off GSD, they are loyal and hard working dogs, but you need to see the parents beofre buying as temprement will come from them and you alike.... |
