Goldfish need time and care, it is cruel to keep a goldfish in a bowl, they like to swim. You would never buy a box, twice the size of your dog and expect him to live in it.

Most fish in this country still come from abroad mainly singapore. They are housed in aquariums and holding tanks on river banks, the water is pumped from the rivers into the tanks and out again. The fish do not live in pollution they live in clear ,well oxygenated water.

If you purchase your fish from a pet shop he will be in a clear well aerated aquarium or vat. If he has come from the fair (which is illegal) 9 out 10 of his brothers have probably died.

Recently research has shown fish do have memories.

Goldfish are excellent pets for children, but please treat them like all other pets, give them a home they can be happy in. Treat them to live plants and a filter to keep the water clean and healthy. You can buy a gravel cleaner so changing part of the water every couple of weeks takes 5 mins to do.

They do not ask for a lot in life. No vet bills, do not need to go for a walk, cheap to feed, live up to 20 years. A filter reduces how ofter you have to clean the aquarium so saves you time and less stress for the fish.

Remember to add decloranator to the fresh water on a change as chlorine is a bleach, which can erode the fishes gills. Standing the water overnight is not any good because the water board add chloramin which does not come off as a gas.

An undergravel filter is the best option clean every 2-3 weeks with a gravel cleaner and your fish will be happy and healthy.

If you go for an internal filter you must never wash the sponge under the tap, you will kill all the beneficial bacteria it has taken you weeks to grow. When you syphon the water into the bucket during cleaning ,wash the sponge out in this water then replace inside filter and back into the tank.

Never overstock the aquarium in the first few weeks one goldfish, fed every 2-3 days for 4-5weeks or until filter has matured. Get your water checked (cost £1) at pet shop and add more fish when water is ready.
