Advantages: so easy they virtually look after themselves

Disadvantages: might get eaten, annoying when you have to go and buy more

We used to have the gold fish in a bowl next to the TV, this lead to the cat sitting in front of the tv (blocking our view) and watching the fish go round and round. The cat (fortunately) was rubbish at catching them, but we moved them to the pond outside. The cat still spend most of her day watching them but they now have much more room to escape :)

Gold Fish in pond are great! you don;t have to clean them, plants in the water will do that for you. you don't have to feed them over the winter (when its cold and i probably wouldn't bother going out in the snow to feed them) only in the summer when you can watch them swimming around. when the pond froze over they were fine for days under there! and in ponds they grow really big and have babies, which is so cute! and a frog has arrived this week :)

Summary: have you're own little eco sytem drive by goldfish

Don't think breaking the ice is such a good idea, the shock waves that will be sent through the pond might kill the poor little things, there are gaps around plants and in this country the ice never stays for very long. If the pond is large enough the stored oxygen should keep them going for a few days.

according to wiki, in the winter fish get sluggish stay at the bottom of the pond and stop eating, I learn something everyday!
