Goldfish: Not as daft as you think
Member Name: excavator
Advantages: Fascinating and intelligent creatures
Disadvantages: Not great conversationists
So they reckon a goldfish has a memory span of about three seconds? Would I therefore assume they have little intelligence? In my experience this is clearly not the case.
As a child I had a pair of goldfish. They were won at the fair. It wasn't long before one died and the other seemed to go off its food, I guess it must have been moping. Anyway, on finding it a replacement mate (I say mate, but not in the true sense or at least I don't think so, as we hadn't a clue what sex they were - let's just call it a companion) - it seemed to perk up again.
Anyway, time passed and one became ill. It had some kind of fungal disease - I think we had some drops to put in the water or something - but all the same, it just laid motionless on the bottom for most of the time. But come feeding time, and it's companion - who clearly got excited when he (there I go again - or she!) saw us approaching the bowl with the little tub of fish flakes - would repeatedly swim up and down nudging food flakes to the bottom and pushing them into the other's mouth.
Now, tell me that these are neither signs of intelligence or of memory.
Summary: Care for their companions
