Advantages: wonderful, loving creatures

Disadvantages: owned by a lot of morons

Green iguana's are spectacular animals, but keeping them as pets, well here's some info.

First thing I would say to anyone wanting to keep a green iggy, they grow big and live long. So if you're not happy to share your home with a 6-8 foot lizard for the next 15+ years then forget it.

They are also, of course cold blooded, so could you heat a (very large) cage for the animal to an ambient 85 degrees all year around, because trust me, it isn't cheap to do so.

Iguanas are also fairly clever for a reptile, so they need every day attention and car other wise that little cute lizard you just bought will be 6 foot long with an attitude and a dislike of humans in a few years.

Now those are some of the main "bad" points of an iguana, but there are many good points for the owner who truly wants to keep this creature healthy and happy.

They are very friendly animals, often coming to sit with you and watch TV, take food from your hands and they do love a scratch behind the ear. They can be fascinating to watch in their house if you offer them enough room to climb and swim.

They are vegetarian animals, so feeding them is not an issue as foods that are good for them can be found at your local supermarket, or even grown in your own garden.

These are wonderful animals, but please really do a lot of research before buying one, there are enough there in rescue homes as it is, don't add to the problem.

Summary: a large lizard that should only be considered once fully researched

I have two Green Iguanas, lovely animals, but hard and expensive to keep.
