Advantages: bread easily

Disadvantages: other fish like to nip their pretty tails

guppies are the rabbit of the fish world; they are born to breed (or practice). For this reason, even if you are planning on breading you should ensure you have at least 2 females for every male (this is so one lady gets to rest while the other is 'in use') to stop them getting stressed, sick & dying.

They live to be about 2 years old, the males are prettier, slimmer than females.

At first breeding (takes about 30 days pregnancy) your female may have 1,2,3 babies, next time 10 then upto 30 at a time...sometimes she has babies at the same time with different dads!

Many fish will eat guppy babies as they're so small, but if you have some plants (fake or real) the chances are some of the babies will find somewhere to hide and survive).

You can feed the babies a special liquid fry food or just crumble up flake food and again you should be ok.

Although it's nice to put these fish in with ones that nip it's reassuring to know that their tails will grow back if eaten.

Great, hardy, starter tropical fish - very pretty.

Summary: good started fish

I find they bread so much you don't 'need' to decant the babies, unless you're breeding them to sell on...

What my Grandad used to do was take the Pregnant Guppies into a different tank will they gave birth and then move the babies back into hios big tank when they were all big enough not to be eaten.
