Advantages: Great family horse, dependable, reliable and hard-working.
Disadvantages: Cost of keeping it.
The Haflinger
Haflingers are usually a light or dark chesnut sort of colour with a white or flaxen(off-white) mane and tail. They usually have an expressive face with large dark eyes. A stallions head should be strong and dark where the Mare's should be lighter and slightly more feminine looking. They have reasonably long necks on sloping shoulders perfect for riding. They have broad bodies with a reasonably deep girth, around 175cms. Their limbs are strong, lean and well positioned with hard and healthy hooves. They are usually between 140cm and 150cm high. They have a long stride and quite a bouncy trot, therefore comfortable to ride.
Their temprement should be friendly, patient hard-working and willing.
Haflinger's need and crave plenty of exercise but do not need an extremly large field but must have regular access to water. Despite being a hardy breed Haflinger's also require easy access to a shelter from the cold and wet.
Haflingers are also suitable for competing and at present there are many successful Haflingers in top-level competitions.
Haflinger's are also great for family's because they are so versatile and their desire to please combined with their placid temperament makes them great for teaching children how to ride.
My daughter is only nine and is by now quite an experience rider. She now jumps, canters and goes on treks with her friends. She would never have got to this stage so fast if it had not been for the loving and patient Haflinger, Noddy, which she learnt to ride and jump on.
The Haflinger is bred as a patient horse suitable to ride on all year long and perfect for beginers and experienced riders alike.
Summary: A haflinger is a great horse to learn to ride on but if also great for experienced riders.
