Advantages: great pets
Disadvantages: none
Hamsters make great pets.
There are two main types available which are the standard syrian hamster which has to be kept alone and the russian dwarf which is smaller and can be kept in groups.
To keep a hamster you will need a hamster cage, there are many different types available but i prefer the plastic rota stack style cage as these do not have any bars to get there feet or fur caught on and are suitable for small hamsters like russian dwarfs.
I have always used wood shavings in the bottom of my hamsters cage as it is cheap to buy and easy to clean out, they only need cleaning once a week.
You need a water bottle for your hamster to drink from as they cant drink from a bowl and this needs changing every day so they have a fresh supply of water, i only feed my hamster every two days as he hoards more of his food in his house than he actually eats.
I used to use shredded paper in his house but he used to get this stook around his legs so now we just use a hamster bedding very similar looking to cotton wool, it is lovely and soft for him to lie on.
Hamsters are very friendly once tame but do need to be handled a lot to keep them tame, they are not a pet you can have and just forget about once the novelty wears off.
Summary: a great pet
