Advantages: cheap to care for, little characters.

Disadvantages: can bite and get sick easily.

Oh how I love hamsters! I have owned a couple in my life time, unfortunately a lot of them don't live more than 4-5 years. I have only owned golden Syrian hamsters. They cost around £5 and the cage plus accessories is around £40-£50 depending on what you want to spend. The habitrail hamster homes are fantastic homes for hamsters in my opinion.

My last hamster was full of character. He learned to swing on the door of his cage until it opened, then he would run all along the room. He would run into my TV cabinet and climb up the back of my CD storage, pushing them all out one by one!

I have never been bitten by any of my hamsters, frequent handling helps. They need cleaned out once or twice a week but are generally quite clean, and can be trained to use a potty.

Hamsters can be prone to illness, including the common cold so ensure your hamsters cage is dry and in a warm place.
