Advantages: good pets, easy to look after, great for young children

Disadvantages: like to chew things and can be quite the escape artists

we have many pets here. you name it we've had it at some point. but my five year old recently reaslied none of these pets had been "her" pets. she wanted something she could look after. clean out, name, feed, play with and just to be hers. so after much deliberation we decided on a syrian hamster. the reasoning behind this was simple. we knew it had to be a small pet, in a cage. we already had rats or we may have chosen them purely for their size. we ruled out all other small pets based on costs, how easy they would be to look after and things like that. although sometimes fast at first Syrian hamsters grow quite big. for exercise they can have a ball. my daughter hasn't handled him much as he is still quite quick, but she was good with the rats so it will come. hamsters can live alone, and should really because they can fight in pairs. they are quite cheap to look after once you have brought the things you need to begin with. a cage, food bowl and water bottle, a wheel, a ball and some toys perhaps. after that you just have to buy the food which i brought for £3.99 from pets at home and should last about a year. and bedding can be picked up form tesco for about two pound and they need cleaning out about once a week. hamsters last 2-2.5 years. sometimes a bit longer, but then it varies with all pets really doesn't it. would defiantely recommend a hamster as a small pet for a child. for older children i probably would recommend against it as there are more intelligent animals such as rats and degu's that may be more stimulating for older children.

Summary: good small pets
