Advantages: cheap and easy to look after
Disadvantages: only live for about 2 years
I bought a black Syrian hamster for my eldest two children when my youngest was born so that they wouldn`t feel left out. Firstly, I explained to them that they had to look after it, feed it, water it etc.. Then I told them how important it was that they be very careful with it as hamsters can be very fragile. We bought it from Pet City and it cost £4.50. The cage and excercise equipment and feeding stuff only cost £5.00 second hand. When you buy second hand it is important that you clean everything thoroughly. The food was only £1.99 for a big bag which lasted us about 6 months. The sawdust for the bottom of the cage was only £1.99 for a big bag and lasted about 3 months. The cage gets cleaned once a week on the day the rubbish goes out, and the children help to do this. He gets taken out of his cage every evening and the kids play with him for a while then he goes into his excercise ball for half an hour. Because he is handled frequently he is very friendly and won`t bite. The kids top up his food and water every few days and are happy to do this as he is THEIR pet. You should never go near a hamster if you have a cold as they can catch the germs very easily and often don`t survive a cold. You should also make sure you put the cage away from any draughts.

- 16/04/01 My sister-in-law had a hamster which I named "teeth" for obvious reasons!
Teeth waited for me to arrive every friday, the day we visited,so that I would feed her pastry. This little personality gave us a great deal of pleasure, though not sentient, was much loved.
She died after only two years and left grown adults very sad at her passing.
This is a hard way for children to learn about death and not easy for adults.
Teeth was my friend and is well remebered as your kids will remeber their hamster.
