Advantages: advertised as low maintenance, unique shape

Disadvantages: too small, too expensive, poor instructions

I bought the 2 gallon hexafun aquarium kit for my 14 year old goldfish. I originally liked this kit as it was advertised as low maintenance, coming complete with filter, air pump a plastic plant and a unique hexagonal shape. I asked in the pet shop if it would be suitable for an old largish fish (he's about 3" in length) and I was assured it would be.

On returning home and opening the box I was rather disappointed to find a tub of tropical fish food inside. This was strange as the box advertised the kit "for goldfish" and furthermore had a picture on the front with three goldfish inside the hexafun tank. Perhaps I'm being pedantic here, maybe tropical fish and goldfish food is really the same thing - I don't really know as I've only ever had goldfish.

The next disappointment was the size of the tank. It really didn't look all that big, especially when I saw it in context with my fish in his original tank, furthermore, the tank was made of plastic not glass which made me wonder why it cost £28 in the first place. I decided to continue to build the aquarium and see how things went from there.

Next I took out the instructions, which consisted of a crude diagram and some rather ambiguous steps to setting up the aquarium. As it wasn't very complicated I managed to build it up without instructions, however when it came to setting up the pump things became a little less clear. I found that there was an attachment already on the end that went inside the tank, however I also found a different valve like attachment separate in the packaging. I consulted the instructions again to find out how this all went together but found no mention of this set-up anywhere. After a few attempts at putting it together different ways, I eventually discovered that this valve actually went between the attachment already on the pump and the clear plastic hose. It would have been easier if they had fitted this prior to throwing <
br>all the parts in the box, which would have saved the time and hassle I had.

Finally I put the water in the aquarium and added the solution to make it suitable for fish and left it all for a few hours to settle. A few hours later I returned and transferred my fish into his new tank.

After few hours of watching my fish, I went out to the nearest pet store and bought a decent size tank for £11 and transferred the parts that I could use from the hexafun tank into that. It didn't take me long to work out that my poor fish had nowhere near enough room and that the hexafun tank was far too small for any goldfish and was definitely not worth the £28 I spent on it. Please take my advise and don't bother buying one of these kits or you'll end up being disappointed and out of pocket like me.

I read online somewhere that they have been known to last for up to 40 years so I might have him for a while yet!
