Advantages: Very tame
Disadvantages: Smell really bad
My husband works in a school and every year at christmas time they do a 'secret santa'. This year my hubby managed to pick our best friends name out of the hat which we thought was pretty cool. We got to thinking what she liked and what would be a good present to get her. We have a great relationship with her and her hubby and we are always winding each other up and having a joke. We thought about getting her some of her favourite sweets and chocolate or some nice smellies but that all went out of the window when we were walking to church yesterday. We passed our local petshop and my hubby said 'We could get her a mouse', and that was that, decision made! We been laughing eversince but the joke will be on us if she doesn't want it!
Before I continue this review I have to tell you that I'm not basing it on having owned a mouse for less than 24hours. I have had mice in the past so know a bit about them:)
Mice are very inquisitive animals and can be tamed very easily. They are very intelligent although I'm not sure they are as intelligent as rats. They make great pets especially if you have children as they can be tamed very easily and are small enough to fit their dinky hands. They live for around 1-11/2 years so they aren't as big of a commitment as other animals.
Mice are like rabbits, there teeth grow very quickly so they need something in there cage that they can gnaw on to keep their little teeth at a good length.
When my hubby and I lived in our old house we basically had a zoo of animals. From tortoises to ducks and rabbits to birds. You name it we had them. I was never satisfied when it came to animals. I suppose I became a bit addicted to getting the next thing (What can I say? I was very broody). One day I decided I wanted a couple of mice. We bought two males so they had to live separately because they started fighting when they hit puberty. I kept them in two plastic fish tanks which was a great home for them because they couldn't chew through the plastic and the walls were high enough so they couldn't get out. It was much cheaper than buying an actual cage for them. They cost us £2.95 each although the one we bought yesterday was £5 (the credit crunch even affects the mice).
At first I loved them. I always had them out and spent ages watching them but then I just got fed up of them peeing on me when I held them and the smell they made was ridiculous. I had to clean them out about three times a week because they stunk so much. I was told after that the females don't smell as much as the males (hence buying a female yesterday). There cages also get in a mess very quickly. You wouldn't think that such a tiny animal could make such a mess.
Overall mice are very cute but for me the novelty soon wore off and my friend took them off my hands. If you are after a pet that will cuddle up close and sit on your lap then don't go for one of these.
Oh and if you are going to get a pair make sure you buy them off someone who knows there stuff. My neighbour thought she had two females and one ended up having babies. They breed very quickly and at one point she counted two hundred running around the cage.
Summary: A good pet if your not looking for a long commitment.
