Advantages: Very affectionate and great with children
Disadvantages: prone to weight and health problems
The pug apparently originate from the shang dynasty and was bred to simply sit on the laps of emperors. The popularity of this dog then spread to Tibet where they were kept by monks then Japan then finally Europe where they were imported to by the Dutch East Indies Trading Company in around the 16th/17th century.
Ok but about the dog itself. To look at i always think they look a bit like a baby Mastiff they are for many a dog you will either think is gorgeous or downright ugly! Although they are a toy dog they are one of the biggest of this catergory and although they can very well be a lap dog, anyone buying a puppy and thinking they are going to get a lapdog instently may be sadly mistaken as Pugs do have a lot of life in them and have quite strong or perhaps I should say stubborn personalities! Don't get me wrong though these are VERY affectionate dogs and my 5 month old pug Ralphie loves nothing better than to be carried around and cuddled. Every evening he falls asleep next to us on the sofa!
They are prone to weight gain though and other health problems such as respiratory and with their eyes due to the bulging. Regards the weight this is something we are trying to currently combat at the moment with Ralphie! Exercise wise he does actually really enjoy going for his walk and loves a small run too although you do have to be careful it isn't too long and that he doesn't get too excited and overheat, something else you have to watch for when playing with other dogs too! As i mentioned previously these dogs really don't like the heat and should not be out in hot weather for very long at all and water should always be available to them.
Having said all this I realise I have perhaps made them out to be a bit of a handful but they are lovely lovely dogs, wonderful with children (i have a 2 year old and 3 year old!)
who give a lot of affection and also a lot of entertainment!
Summary: A wonderful dog to own!!!
