Advantages: Friendly

Disadvantages: not hardy

Rabbits are attractive pets but do come with some pitfalls. They are not particularly hardy animals and are prone to chill in winter, so need to be in a draft free area with plenty of fresh bedding. They find it difficult to recover from respatary infections. Few pet shops will tell you that they can catch Mixomatosis from wild rabbits and that they should be innoculated. Even if you buy from a breeder, they may turn out to be someone who bought a pregnant rabbit and not be very knowledgeable. Do get expert advice on caging and innoculations before buying a rabbit. Remember that having a pair willl involve the mail being castrated unless you want litters and rabbits are not good with anesthetics, so it is a risk, a single male can live with a guinea pig for company, or two does will live peaceably together. Make sure you are with someone who knows how to sex rabbits when you buy, do not rely on what you are told by the seller. They have been known to be wrong and you could have an unwanted litter on your hands in no time. Rabbits stress easily and are not good pets for small children.

Rabbits aren't good with ordinary anaesthtics, but nowadays a vet who knows about rabbits will use a specialist one. All of my rabbits have had one for one reason or another. Make sure your vet is up-to-date, the first one we tried (when my rabbit broke his leg) warned me about it, so we took him somewhere else.
