Advantages: Great to watch and play with
Disadvantages: Need lots of space and time.
I am a first time rabbit owner but have a lot of experience of keeping guinea-pigs. I have had my present (male) rabbit and (male) guinea pig for a year now and they live very happily together. I have seen no evidence of fighting between them, they are both dominant towards the other at different times. The biggest problem i would say with this combination of pets is that male rabbits which are not neutered will spray the territoy to mark it as theirs - this can make a lot of mess with an indoors rabbit. The solution is easy though will result in a costly vets bill. There is no need to neuter the guinea pig as they do not spray in this way.
Our pets live indoors in winter and ourdoors in summer - i cannot agree more with other opinions which say rabbits need lots of exercise time and space. It is very obvious when your rabbit is bored and they have destructive tendencies at the best of times so watch out for your carpet/ books/ wallpaper.
Although my rabbit is a lovely pet he is independent and likes people on his own terms - lots of handling (gently) when young will make your rabbit tame and manageable but they dont all like to be manhandled all the time. For this reason i would say rabbits which can be strong and have sharp teeth and claws may not be the best pet for young children. Guinea pigs are probably a much better bet being smaller and more manageable.
