Advantages: Very relaxing and funny
Disadvantages: Can be expensive
At Easter my parents bought a lovely silvery grey baby rabbit for my three girls which they have named Misty, they also bought the Hutch, food bowl, drinking bottle, Hay, Wood flakes and a big pack of junior food. We purchased a run, so misty can eat lovely fresh grass, and have a bit of exercise which cost about £50.00.
Through my childhood I’ve had lots of pet, Hamsters, rabbits, cats and not forgetting dogs. I thought it was about time my daughters started to show some responsibility, and looking after a rabbit was a good place to start. Their jobs include feeding, making sure the rabbit has always got fresh water and of course the job of cleaning the hutch out every weekend. The girls are still very interested in the rabbit. I was a bit worried; I would end up looking after the rabbit my self.
The rabbit has cost a lot of money in vet’s bills since. One of her back toes started to go bright red and got very swollen.
I had already found a vet, because rabbits have to have myxomatosis Jab and VHD Jab which together cost another £30.
The vet put her on a course of antibiotics, then more and more, but nothing seemed to reduce the swelling. In the end the vet decided to amputate the toe. Rabbit’s bones get infected very quickly, and the disease can travel through the whole body.
The amputation cost about £70. I would definitely recommend looking at pet insurance, I didn’t and so far Misty has cost me £150. The pet insurances I have looked at do not cover Vaccinations.
I still think this is helping my daughters. Even with the expenses of the vet’s bills.
I sometime just sit in the garden watching the rabbit out in its run and I find it very relaxing and sometimes very funny. Every time I go past the rabbit run it always comes over and says hello, well nearly.
Even through all this, the rabbit is still very gentle and feeds out of my daughters and my hand
