Advantages: great pets and easy to tame

Disadvantages: smell but only a little bit

Rats are specially bred for pets producing a nice variety of colours compared to the original black and brown rats that used to carry the plague and surprisingly people still think that rats are dirty when infact they are actually very clean.

For keeping a pet rat i would recomend an indoor rabbit cage with a plastic bottom and bars on the top, these are much the same as hamster cages except conciderably larger.

We use sawdust as a substrate in the bottom of there cage and spot clean there toilet area every day and disinfect the cage completley once a week.

Do not be tempted to line your rat cage with newspaper to make cleaning easier as this is a complete waste of time as they love to shred paper so it will not last long, just give then a couple of pieces to be able to shred as fun and they will make themselves a bed out of this.

My rats have a couple of pieces of plastic drain pipe in there cage which they like to play in and the babys will also sleep in.

Pet shops sell a large variety of rat toys to keep your pet amused all night long as they are nocturnal but i am still hunting for a wheel big enough for them as they get so big.

A proper rat food is available from any good pet shop and this is best for your rat as it will contain all the nutrients he or she needs. ours love pieces of fruit, pasta and cheese as a treat.

Keeping a male and female rat together is not a good idea unless you want babies as a rat is capable of getting pregnant at just 5 weeks old, is only pregnant for 3 weeeks, has about 12 babies per litter and can get pregnant again as soon as 24 hours after giving birth you could soon be over run with them if you are not careful.

Summary: these make great pets and love human company

Aww cute. I don't like the idea of rats though...just the name puts me off as well as their look and nature. Great review,

Great review, I've never really considered rats as pets but now you've changed my mind :)
