Advantages: Very friendly and intelligent animals
Disadvantages: Short life span
Over the last 6 years i have had the pleasure of sharing my life with 7 rats, 4 bucks and 3 does, none of which i have anymore unfortunately but i feel this adorable pet needs as much positivity as possible.
When i was 12 i asked my Dad for 2 pet rats for my birthday, he wasn't too happy with this idea and made me settle for a Hamster but finally 6 years later when i met my boyfriend i found a fellow rat lover and so my experience of being a rat owner began.
At the time we were living in a one room bedsit but are both animal mad so made our own cage and proceeded to head off to Pets At Home to acquire 2 animals which is where we found Rufus and Doughnut.
Doughnut a black and white buck was sitting in the tank staring at us throughly excited whilst Rufus an albino buck was fast asleep in the corner which was a familiar site for the rest of his life, i fell in love straight away with the tiny little fellas so we took them home to live in there new 3 level cage, it was pretty much a rat mansion.
I won't go into there whole life story but Rufus was the calmest little creature in the world, he was never happier than when he was munching or asleep and he loved to curl up in peoples laps and be stroked. Doughnut was a lot more feisty, he would run around our bedsit sniffing everywhere and getting into as much trouble as possible but in a cute way!
Rufus never bit apart from once when he thought i was food whilst half asleep and this makes them the ideal animal for children, yes hamsters are cute but they can nip at times whilst Rats are a lot more docile.
They are very clean creatures and can even be litter trained and are highly intelligent learning tricks and there surroundings easily.
Sadly Rufus was found dead after 1.5yrs in his cage but Doughnut lived on until he was nearly 3 years old.
We also had 2 more bucks named Lit Lit and Pepper and 3 does, Apple, Tallulah and Paw Paw.
I personally find bucks a better pet as they easier to handle than does as does are very fast, a lot slimmer than the male rat and so may not be the best choice for a child looking for a pet.
The only disadvantage to having a rat is there short life span averaging 2.5 years but this is the same with any small animal.
If your looking for a pet for yourself or child get a rat!
Summary: Get a rattie!
