Advantages: fun
Disadvantages: smell
I had a pet rat once. His name was Norman Humphrey Bogart Bruff. There's no excusing it, I was eccentric as a boy. Norman cost just £4 but brought me a lot of joy.
There are a few things I would like to point out about rats:
1) They smell- and I mean SMELL. They're big, and mice are sweet compared to them. Give them a big cage and they just smell more. My whole room stank for years!
2) They wee - Norman got into my teddy collection and peed over the lot once, meaning it all went in the bin. They wee (it seems) nearly as much as mice.
3) Their tails scare people- they look like slowworms and people hate them. I never understood it!
4) They are clever -Norman was tame, did tricks, and would have been able to ride a unicycle if I had a small one for him.
5) They are robust -my mate's rat used to sit on his shoulder when he rode his motorbike; they're strong, and that makes them pretty cool for boys who can play rough with them.
6) They bite things- my Simpsons duvet cover was full of holes!
7) They live a few years - like all rodents, expect no more than three years.
8) They can get ill. Mine had an injection, had an allergic reaction to it, developed a huge boil scab thing and passed the infection onto me. They are NOT the cleanest of animals!
All in all, rats are robust and great for boy's pets as they can withstand a bit of rough and tumble, but they will wreck wherever you let them go!
Summary: do it

- 07/10/09 Not a pet I'd ever want! Although I hear they can be wonderful little creatures to own. |

- 07/10/09 I found one in my garage once and it scared the hell out of me. It somehow managed to jump about a foot onto the top of the fridge, I didn't go out in the garage for weeks afterwards! |
