Advantages: A friendly, tame pet
Disadvantages: The tail can be offputting.
I have had three different types of rodents as pets in my time: Gerbils, Hamsters and a Rat, and I must say that Basil the Rat was the best one. I have been bitten by Gerbils and Hamsters (even a budgie) but never by Basil. Rats are much more intelligent than the other rodents and if handled frequently can be very tame. Basil would go everywhere with me (although they didn't like me to take him into work to say hello - I worked in the Kentucky Fried Chicken!) I used to wear a t-shirt under a V neck top so that he could sit on my boob (he preferred my left one) in peace and pop out to say hello whenever I stopped, then he would sit on my shoulder and wrap his tail around my neck to hold on. I had him for 2 1/2 years and then he had a stroke and died. Rats need a large area to live in and I kept Basil in a Rabbit Hutch, when he wasn't running around the house. When my kids start to have pets I will try to persuede my husband to let them have a Rat (he doesn't want them to have any pets), as I firmly believe that they are the friendliest of all the rodents.

- 24/11/00 A lot of people probably wont agree with you ,because rats have bad press. I like wild animals ,Im rather fond of sqirrels, and mice ,and I think I could get to like rats.
as I have several cats I wont be able to though .I am always rescueing injured animals from them .I managed to save a Jay from them and 2 field mice .Thankyou for adding me to your list of friends . |

- 20/11/00 I agree, my sister used to keep rats and they were lovely, most people don't realise that the ones that live down drains aren't the same as the ones you keep as pets! |
