St Bernard

Description: Animal Species: Dogs

Newest Review: ... have found out that feeding ours and our previous cooked meats can cause alot of mess in the garden...without goin into detail you wouldnt do it again. Obviously a fairly large living area is required as these are VERY active dogs at around 1-3 and you may need locks on your doors as they learn to use their teeth to open door handles if they are face level, they are very clever but if told ... more

... off do take it very seriously and may not pay attention to you for a few days becasue of there stubborness. Walking : As Bonzo is aged 2 he is very excited and active when taken out and we have invested in a mussel, not to stop him from biting anyone but...more

Probably the best 'teddy bearish' dog you'll find, we have had 2 with our latest one still around called Bonzo whos 2, our first was called Molly and she lived until she was 12 [she had to be put down] which is brilliant as their average life span is 7-9. Looking After : Alot of people seem to think that st bernards eat a donkey a day.....thats not the case im afraid all ours has is 5 scoops of biscuit mixed with a small amount of a chicken mix brought from a local pet store and a small amount of biscuit for breakfast, we have found out that feeding ours and our previous cooked meats can cause alot of mess in the garden...without goin into detail ...  Read the complete review

Back a couple of years ago, my mum had this brilliant idea to get another puppy. It was a toss between an old english sheepdog or a saint bernard.Obviously there would be a difference in the price you pay for them, but mum and dad had some compensation money so they had enough to spend on a new puppy of any breed. So after a long hard think about what she would prefer mum chose a saint bernard. Now at the time we didn't know much about them.We have never seen one out and about, all we really knew was they were expensive! So the first thing we did was find as much information as possible on the internet. We also bought 2 saint bernard books. However no matter what we ...  Read the complete review

ntil a few years ago, I had never really taken a lot of notice of the Saint Bernard breed of dog, and now I own three, my latest addition an nine week old puppy bitch, which I have had for a few days only. I will tell you all about them after a short history lesson. HISTORY: It is believed that this large breed originated in Switzerland and were named after a man called (Great Saint Bernard), who became an Arch Deacon and founded many hospices and monasteries way back in the 10th century. There was a pass made across the Alps named after him. The area was very bleak, with snow-covered rocks and jagged peaks. An iron statue of him points the way to one ...  Read the complete review

The St Bernard is a lovely breed and has a very good temperment with other dogs and children. They make a very loyal pet and a good companion and love all the fuss they can get. We currently own an eleven month old bitch (Tara) who is a big softie. I got her from my mother who is a breeder of St Bernards, she was one of a litter of thirteen. They are a very big boned breed and need bonemeal as a pup as their bones grow at a very fast rate. Also with the St Bernard you have to watch their diet very carefully as to much weight can be very dangerous as they are prone to heart problems. They do not need alot of exercise due to ...  Read the complete review

St. Bernards make wonderful companions. I have a seven month old smooth-coated. His heart is as large as his physique. Saints are of course, not for everyone. They can be quite stubborn in their puppyhood, particularly the males. Like all dogs, they need sufficient exercise daily, but care must be taken not to over-exercise as the risk for hip dysplasia increases. They eat a considerable amount, however they do NOT "eat you out of house and home," as countless non-Saint owners warned us. They do "slobber" but not to the excessive drooling extent that people envision. Normal day to day living around the house does not produce ...  Read the complete review
