Advantages: Best dog temperament and don't shed hair everywhere
Disadvantages: Stinky parps
I own and reside with two Staffies, a male and a female and wanted to write about my experiences with them to help the reader decide if this is the dog for them.
The Staffie is a highly intellignent breed of dog. They quickly learn commands if you are consistend, and my sister's female staffie can 'roll ove' and 'shut the door'. With less time i am happy with sit, come etc!
An excellent family pet my two and those i have met, are extremely caring and gentle. They play so gently with my 14mth old but knwo instinctively they can be rougher with the five year old. They are still babies and occassionally knock the baby over. Unaware of their own strength they can be clumsy and hurt you y accident but the tears of my baby alert them to this and they become very protective and hate crying!
A highly energetic dog, they need plenty of playtime and daily walks. It is important with this very strong breed to command the walk from the first step or your dog will be walking you, not the other way around. My best tip here is CESAR MILAN - google him! The dog whisperer is my savour!
A word of caution is that this dog is stubborn and if you start to feed human food expect a battle of wills when you return to dog food. As we speak my stubborn bitch (female) has not eaten for 2 days although i have put fresh food down daily. She wants our dinners! With a hearty apetite they are also prone to weight gain, but plenty of exercise should keep your muscular dog in perfect shape.
Feeding should be high quality food with a large protein component. We tried Raw food but it was gross so we now mainly stick to nature's diet and home made dog food. My female gets eczema from pedigree but if we are desperate we will grab a crate of butcher's supreme (the brown tins)
As pups i found both of mine liked to chew and lost around 4 pairs of shoes this way. Hide shoes and put wires out of the way if you leave your dog at all!
I have found my Staffies to be fantastic pets. They do poo twice a day each so to keep the garden being overrun it is clean up every evening. They do get lonely and my female gets our shoes from the hall and lays with them when we are out, so leaving something with your scent on should help them settle. Fantastic with kids it is best to introduce them early!
Something to be aware of is their ability to keep you awake at night with their serious snoring and stinky parps. Out of all dogs the gases a staff releases is seriously noxious! My advice - keep 'em out of ya bed (if ya can cos they are so cuddly)
Summary: My favourite dogs
