Advantages: Beautiful, Mute Swans very quiet and peaceful

Disadvantages: None.

This is a really interesting product to be in the dooyou catalogue, especially under pets because swans are almost never kept as "pets". Some of the more exotic swans, like the black swan, can be purchased from people breeding ornamental "Wildfowl" and I have seen them at poultry auctions, but largely the only way to get swans on your lake is to wait and see if any wild ones arrive.

The Mute Swan is the common British swan. It is huge and white, and has a gracefully curved neck. The picture accomapnying this review product on dooyoo features a mute swan, although as cygnets, mute swans are grey, turning brown as the juveniles become slightly older.

The Whooper Swan is distinguised from the mute swan by the lack of the black colouration at the base of the swan's bill and from the Bewick's swan that will come later by its significantly smaller size. Found mainly in Western Scotland and Western Northern Ireland, they are no where near as wide spread as the mute swan.

Bewick's swan is similar to the whooper swan because of the yellow present in the bill. It is found in the Southern areas of the United Kingdom. Bewick's Swans and Whooper Swans migrate each winter from the Russian Arctic, to Northwest Europe.

Swans pair for life, although it is known for them to "divorce" if there is an unsuccessful/failed nest. The number of eggs laid in a nest ranges from three to eight. Swans are in the family anatidae which also includes ducks and geese. Apparently it is a myth that the queen owns every swan in Britain, and it is only true to say that she owns certain mute swans on the Thames.

Summary: I love Swans, they are remarkable birds.
