Advantages: great character, no moulting, cheap to feed due to size
Disadvantages: need sound training, often neglected as they are small and people seem to think it doesn't matter
I own 2 yorkies - a male who's 4 and a female who's 1. I love them because they don't moult, the're very "portable" as they're small and they are very intelligent dogs. I can't stand it when people say they're "just lap dogs" - in my experience, they're nothing but! My 2 will walk for literally miles and love it ; in fact, having had larger dogs in the past, I was amazed how much stamina they had as puppies as with the bigger breeds I'd had they would get tired as pups out walking.
I have found them very easy to train and more intelligent than other dogs I've had. They are very loyal to their owner and will in particular bark at larger dogs, particularly when on the lead. This seems to be such a common thing with Yorkies that I have now come to think they may do this in fear, as a sort of bravado. Off the lead, this doesn't happen and not at all with small dogs.
Yes, they can bark a lot at the front doorbell etc. and I have now banned mine from sitting where they can see out onto the street which is their favourite look out spot! However, the barking was no joke and they seem more settled in themselves now they're discouraged from it.
Always remember these dogs are terriers who happen to be small; they are great company and definite characters and as far removed from the image of the lap dog as you will ever see. By the way, I personally keep my dogs hair short as I don't like them with long hair and I bath them as often as once a week and it does them no harm.
I think this breed is brilliant but would recommend that families with children do not get the very tiny, fragile boned ones as they are not very robust. My dogs are small but chunky and solid and have coped well with my 3 sons and all their mates!
