Disadvantages: can be costly
I have kept discus(symphyodon aequifasciata haraldi)for 8 yrs now and i find them to be the most colourful and elagent of all tropical fish!.
thay are truly the kings of the aquarium.
There are meny types of discus from flame reds to wild browns, thay are all amazing to see but very hard to keep if you dont read up on how to look after them correctly.
Thay need the right P.H. level, the right kind of tank mates, and plants ,and food..
and not forgetin the right size tank.
i have successfully bread discus in my home and its been hard, but i have reept the rewards.
thay are expensive to buy and thay are much in demand but if you have the time and the money and dont forget the love for tropical fish i recomend the discus, just to sit there and simply gaze at ,thay are amazing fish, the colour , size ,and the shere presance of them is out of this world..
To get started , you will only need a min tank size of 3ft and normal kit like pump, light, heater, temp gauge, the only thing i say you should fork out for straight away is a good filter , like an external filter.
once you have had discus for some time and got more knolage then go all out and get things like a OSMOSE UNIT ,this is for gettin the right kind of water, like the sofness, the P.H ,and it removes all eliments that can harm the fish.
there are lots more things to get but only for the keepers that intend BREEDING discus.
