Bosch will help you shave off that excess wood...

This is an electric planer and is one of those tools that needs a bit of getting used to. I tend to use a hand plane but when it comes to 'larger' jobs, an electric plane really does come into its own.
This one is as good as any I've used, with the handle strapped to the top of the rear and having the trigger and lock button on the top edge of the underside, making it easy to pull the trigger and lock the motor on when you need to.
The mains lead slides into the rear end too, keeping it away from the danger zone so that there's little chance of you slicing through the cable.
On the front there is a black know that is what controls the height of the blade, giving you full control when it comes to shaving a fraction off the wood instead of hacking chunks off. This knob clicks around, selecting a number to control how much of the blade is showing.
The blade itself is on the bottom, or the footplate/shoe, this blade sticks out slightly from the metal plate and when the machine is pushed gently along the woods surface. Also on the plate that are small grooves from front to back, these are form when you have to plane the edges of wood, sliding the grooves over the edges themselves.
This was has a rather nice idea of a 'chip clearer'. This is a wide gap near the rear of the machine that allows those larger shaving to pass through, being dragged through by the air that circulates around the unit itself.

This is a fine tool that chomps through any wood that is put in its way. The blade is nice and sharp and should remain that way if you treat it with the respect it deserves.
The depth guide is easy to understand and even easier to use, turn the knob to get the blade deeper or turn it the other way to get it more shallower.

This electric plane sells for about £60.00 which is good money well spent if you intend doing a fair amount of planing
