Powerful performance at a bargain price

A power planer is, in my opinion, an essential tool for anyone serious about tackling any DIY jobs around the house that involve working with wood. From fitting kitchen worktops to trimming a door lining, having a power plane to hand will not only save you time but also give a better finish than using traditional hand planes.

I wasn't expecting great things from a product at this price, but as it was intially intended for use for reducing the thickness of some old timber, I thought I'd take the chance on this cheap and cheerful model from Challenge.

For general use it is fantastic, plenty of power for tackling most jobs you can throw at it and I can even plane across the grain of lengths of wood without splintering the far side. With adjustable depth settings you can take as little off as you like and although the motor isn't as powerful as more expensive models the maximum depth cut is still quite impressive. It's only when taking over 2.5mm off some very hard hardwood that I've noticed the motor even giving the slightest indication that is finding it hard work.

The dust bag sits on the right hand side of the unit so is out of the way of the right handed user and although it keeps most of the dust from the floor I have always found it to be a pain to empty. As a result most of my planing is done outside without the bag, a quick sweep once finished and no messing trying to empty it.

A good length of power lead so you can work on long bits of timber without having to reposition things and despite the looks being very much on the functional side rather than showing any kind of style I think the Challenge 650W planer is a great product especially at this price.

If you're looking for a power plane for a sensible price you can't go wrong with this.
