An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Let me tell you what inspired me to write this pop on Apples. I was watching out of my kitchen window and I saw a beautiful blackbird having a feast on the apple I had thrown onto the lawn. It had gone a bit old and wrinkled in the fruit bowl past its best no one wanted to eat it so I threw it onto the lawn, as I know that the birds will eat it as a winter feast. I often keep my old apple cores and apples that no one will eat for the birds.

Blackbirds are the main birds that eat the apples all the thrush family eat apples and I have seen starlings eating then if they are hungry.
Anyway they were my inspiration


The birds do not seem to be fussy about which apples they eat red green, cookers, and eaters, crispy, soft.

What sort of apple do you prefer?
I prefer a green crispy one, granny smiths, though my husband likes his red and firm.
There are many varieties of apple some are Discovery, Blenhiem orange, Russet, Pippins, Cox, Worcester permain. Cookers Bramley’s, Grenadier, Bountiful, Edward v11.There are also crab apples lots of apples.

I have 4 small trees in my garden I planted them a few years ago A couple of Bramley’s and a couple of Cox two are dwarf tree’s two cordons as I have no room for standards, now they are growing I do not like the cordon shape I prefer a proper tree shape


Apple tree’s come in various styles.

Standard trees, the traditional apple tree grown in orchards they need a ladder for picking the fruit.

Dwarf bush like mine, a dwarf tree a rounded shape with an open centre

Dwarf pyramid trees a tree with a central trunk branches radiating from it in a cone shape.

Cordon trees, a single trunk with clusters of fruit growing from short branches usually trained along a wire fence/support.

Apple trees are available from garden centres and nurseries.

Best plant bare root trees in autumn. Trees grown and sold in pots can be planted most of the year except in severe frost. Apples need a sunny sheltered spot to grow and give you lots of fruit.

Apples grow in most soils they do like very fertile soils so those on chalk like mine need manure or garden compost . Must put some more on mine.

Sex .
How did sex get in here? Well you need boys and girls to make babies. Trees do have male and female pollen but unless it’s a self-pollinating tree it needs another compatible apple tree nearby to cross-pollinate. They usually can not do it with pollen from flowers growing on the same tree It would be a bit like close siblings having babies Apple trees have evolved so that does not happen thus having stronger better fruits and seeds.

Apple blossom beautiful in April May sweet smell.
Some birds like to come and peck at the buds in early spring bullfinches. I can remember my father getting very upset with them.

Lots of insects live on Apple trees

Thripps (thunderflies) like to get into apple blossom and suck out the juice (sap) this can prevent the apple developing. The winter moth female lays her egg in the bark of the apple tree and the green caterpillars eat the apple leaves.

The codlin moth is a pest the adult moth lays her eggs on apple leaves in May and the young caterpillar tunnels into the apple and munches your juicy apple, beware if you haven’t inspected your apple there is only one thing worse than finding a caterpillar in your apple that’s******* half a caterpillar. There are other insects that like apple trees.

I do not spray my trees with poison I like to have a variety of living things in my garden.

Apples contain a high level of antioxidant flavenoids quercetin, which mop up free radicals before they damage body tissues. Apples contain potent anti cancer properties
So get growing and eating those Apples.

Mmmmm Apple pie, Apple cake, spicy apple and sultana fingers, Apple crumble, cider, calvados oh no I am supposed to be on a diet so maybe just a fresh apple from the fruit bowl a Gala I think.
