Basil is another herb that is very useful in cooking. The spice originally comes from India and its history stretches back thousands of years. It is regarded as sacred by the Hindus and was used for disinfecting when Malaria was in the house.

Basil should originally be planted in small pots and then when ready should be transferred without disturbing the roots. The ground should get plenty of Sun and it should be well drained. The plant I feel is not one of the easiest to grow and I have lost a number of bushes before now establishing one.

Basil is a leafy bushy plant and has a strong and distinctive taste. Besides the basic green leaf variety there is a purple leaf type. The plant will grow to a height of about three foot and has a white flower, which comes out in August.

A typical recipe for using Basil would be ‘Pesto’ which would be served with Pasta or soup.

I can't get my basil plant to grow well for the life of me. It is inside and had recently strated to grow well now we're getting a bit more daylight but lately it's been looking anemic and frost bitten. I thought our double glazed windows and central heating would protect it from the cold snap.
