Advantages: easy to grow, very cheap, lovely colours

Disadvantages: you may not like them!

Why?

Well you can display such a riot of colour with them for a start especially if you pick the varieties with those lovely little 'joker' faces in the centers. There are also many varieties to choose from.

This year I'm growing three different kinds.

'Beacon Mix'which are multi-coloured,in shades of red, yellow, violet, crimson and blue, some have faces some do not, some have two colours and others are plain. These I have grown from seed which I collected from the plants in my own garden at the end of the season last year. The variety itself was originally bought from B&Q at £3.90 for 30. This years price, 100 plants (now flowering) FREE!

Delta White

These are giant white pansies I bought them again from B&Q at 10 plants for £2.They were well established when we bought them though and would have cost us £3.60 if I hadn't found them on special offer. They have a huge pure white flower with a small yellow center and spread very quickly so probably best in the border or a pot of its own as it soon smothers everything else. I have successfully managed to split some of them up to gain more display value from them.

Love Duet.

These I've grown from Unwins seed. A lovely pale cream and pale pink colour with a red joker face on each one, so a little more unusualthan the black faces. They cost 99p for a pack of about 40 seeds, though I've only managed to grow 30 plants, not bad though for the price!

I grown to love Pansies and later this year I'll collect the seed from al the ones I have, to sow next spring. This will enable me to buy some new varieties and there are several I have my eye on, I'm also considering trying to collect them all.

I do buy other bedding plants such as marigolds and petunias, but for me the Pansies have offered the best value for money so far and have been the easiest to grow. I also feel the flowers are longer lasting and love t
he way the colours change as they fade.

Store your seed in a paper envelope and put that in a sealed container (I use a glass jar)in the fridge for the winter. In early March sow the seeds in fresh compost in a seed tray or those polystyrene trays you get at the garden center or tiny pots and keep them in a warm light position and you should be able to plant them out in June.Mine have been outside for 3 weeks now and are just getting their first flowers so I feel quite proud of myself!
