**** UPDATE... BEWARE: Since writing this opinion I have been advised that because of the toxicity of Sweet Birch Oil, it not adviseable for the lay person to use any kind of Birch essential oil. This is because bottles are often not properly labelled. You may pick up a bottle labelled 'Birch' and assume that it isn't Sweet Birch (the toxic kind). This could cause problems. Check out the latin family names of the source plants, or, better still, leave this one for the experts. ***** There are two types of birch essential oil and it is extremely important to know the difference between the two. Sweet Birch oil is toxic. It has a sweet and bracing aroma and smells like sweets. BEWARE IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN This is used for muscular pain and to increase circulation. However, I don't use this one and wouldn't recommend it. White Birch is the one I would recommend and the one that the rest of this opinion describes. The tree comes from the family Betulaceae. Oil is extracted by steam distillation and comes from the tender leaf buds of the tree. The main commercial source is France. The aroma is remiscent of freshly cut wood with a scent of wintergreen. This oil is excellent in a carrier oil for use in massage. It is a soothing agent and muscle relaxant. You can blend it with patchouli or vetiver but always mix with a carrier oil. This oil isn't suitable for use by pregnant women. USES: +++++ Dermatitis. Eczema. Psoriasis. Dull, congested skin. Hair tonic. May also offer some relief in arthritis and rhematism. Treat cellulite problems. May help in obesity in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet. How to Use: +++++++++++ For psoriasis ans eczema add three drops of oil to ten mils of carrier oil and massage. Add a couple of drops of birch oil to your shampoo as a hair tonic. (Has
been claimed to restore hair growth!) A couple of drops of birch oil in a tablespoon of carrier oil massaged into tired muscles will make you feel refreshed and relaxed. Try a couple of drops in a warm bath to relax muscles and joints. Warnings: +++++++++ Birch oil (white birch) is non toxic, and doesn't cause problems with sensitive skins. (Remember that there's always the exception though.) Don't mix this oil up with Sweet Birch which is toxic. Always dilute before use. Never put straight on to skin or you may get serious burns. Verdict: ++++++++ I find this oil ideal for massaging aching muscles and a couple of drops in a warm bath is very relaxing. Blend this with pine oil if you have a cold and it will ease breathing if you use it in a difuser. I know I've already said it but take very great care not to mix this up with Sweet Birch Oil. (Which, incidentaly, I don't use).

This is White Birch: You can use this oil to combat dry skin, dandruff as well as fungal infections. The reports show that it can also help with fluid retention, I have yet to find this to be true! (I drink far too much coffee!) Ideally this one is more suitable for massages. This is yet another product that claims to break down the cellulite if massaged into the thighs and buttocks. Well… don’t know about that so much but the massage is really nice! If you don’t have anyone to give you a massage, you can always put a couple of drops in a tub of water and soak your feet, this is a great way to have nice fresh feet and keep the athletes foot away.
