Carrots Everyone must have eaten carrots at some time. I have a row of very small grass like green showing in my vegetable patch soon the first frondy delicate green proper leaves will show and show me that it is where I sowed my carrots. I love baby carrots in a salad or older ones grated and lemon juice and mayonnaise added and pine nuts too make a great salad. Baby carrots with baby peas and a sprig of mint are a delicious summer roast lamb accompanying salad. Oh or carrots with thyme are great too and cooked carrots with thyme and fried lettuce a good way of using all those lettuce I have. Old carrots big and thick are excellent for adding to a winter casserole. I do not have much success with carrots my soil is very chalky and carrots prefer a more fertile soil than I have. Carrot seed can be grown from late spring to early summer I think the early ones are best. The seed should be sown in a shallow drill I usually run a stick along the soil in a line and sow the seed very thinly in that and then cover with a little soil about 1 cm deep. To produce a larger carrot they will need thinning out to 2 or 3 inches 5-7cm apart. They also need to be kept weed free. The pest that bothers the carrot is the carrot fly the fly is attracted by the smell of carrot and lays her egg on them. I garden organically and if I get this I have no solution apparently if you plant African marigolds which smell strong next to them it confuses the carrot fly and keeps it away. Seeds take about 8-12 weeks after seeding to mature so you can pull them There are several varieties of carrot some varieties with a long root some with a short stubby root and a round rooted carrot too. Carrots seed is easily available in garden centres if you wish to try them or miss the growing stage and carrots are fairly cheap in the supermarket best wishes Happy gardening Mary Oh yes and they are good for you got
a lot of vit A

- 07/05/04 Nice review and good advice. My dad used to grow these weird crooked carrots because our soil was too full of stones and pebbles. Is your title meant to sound mystic/cryptic? |
