Advantages: healthy

Disadvantages: when it goes limp

Celery is a green vegetable of which we eat the root or stem. The stalk is crunchy, whereas the root is fleshy.

I first got interested in celery when it showed up on a list of so-called 'speed foods' on the Slimming World diet. This basically meant that it is a low fat, high fibre food that burns more calories to be ingested than are consumed from eating it.

At just 18 calories per 100 grams eaten, it actually burns more than that to digest, so is ideal in a diet. There is no fat in it, and it's just one of those amazing foods nutritionally.

For me, the love of celery was killed when my mum used to put it in food cut into little bits. Knowing it was good for you, I wanted to re-invent it, and came up with the perfect use.

I eat my celery whole (I just chop off the top and bottom). I normally get a pot of cottage cheese and use the celery like a spoon to scoop it out, then take a bite and eat the spoon!

The texture is crunchy, and moist. Water squirts out with each bite. The taste is slightly bitter, but if you're eating it with something then there's no worries there, as the taste will be overpowered by the other thing.

Priced at around 70p for 110grams, it's not too bad, but you must eat it fairly quickly, as within a couple of days the colour stars fading and it goes limp. The crunch is one of the nicest things about it, so get in there before this happens.

All in all, a great healthy snack, and one that will do you nothing but good.

Summary: eat it

I like it in dips but unfortunately the calories in the dips far outweigh the benefits of the low cal celery!
