Christmas cacti Sclumberga bridgesii

My mum has always had Christmas cacti for as long as I remember. One large one is an offspring of one her mother grew. They live for years and years and years I can remember the original plant, it slowly aged and got woody and died.My Granma's had them too so they have lots of family christmassy memories for me.I have one of thier offspring.

Christmas Cacti are a native of Brazil where it was discovered by a Belgium botanist Frederick Sclumberga

Christmas cacti comes in a variety of colours from dark red, pink, orange, yellow and white

Christmas cacti are not real cacti they do need more water than a real cacti. Christmas cacti have succulent leaves where they store some water but when the top of the soil becomes dry they needs good water.

Christmas cacti needs a well-drained soil, likes a light position. Flowers best if kept in a light position not bright sunlight or the sun will burn the leaves, but semi shade it likes long dark nights. Keep the plant out of draughts.

Christmas cacti like it cool no higher than 65%f but above 55%f

Christmas cacti may be placed in the garden in the summer, slowly introduce it to the inside of the house at the end of the summer by taking it inside for a longer period each day.

During October give no or little water but in November resume watering. You should be rewarded by beautiful blooms at Christmas my mums always looks wonderful on the Christmas tea table.

Christmas Cacti are easy to propagate from small cuttings from stem tips put the cuttings in a peat and sand mix and water they should root. My mum took a cutting for me a few years ago it is now a nice small plant .she has many Christmas cacti now and has propagated many to give away.
Thank you for reading may you have a blooming good Christmas cactus.
