Clematis

I think we all recognise Clematis, gaily rambling or sprawling over hedge fence or boundary wall, or majestically climbing up our house walls up and over trellises. With their bright cheery flower. The purple of jackmani the pink of Montana the pink of Nelly Moser the red of Ernest Markham the blue of Frances rives or Henry in white,Or there is always oldmans beard the wild clematis with its white fluffy seeds(where it gets its common name) rambling over wild country hedges

Clematis can be grouped into 3 groups.
Group 1 the early flowering, flowering now we have a Montana flowering as it rambles its way along the dividing wall between my garden and my neighbours. These flower from the last seasons ripened stems these need little pruning Prune /tidy up after they have finished flowering then you will not cut away next years flowering wood.

Group 2 are the larger early flowered variety a solitary flower on a stem coming from the previous seasons ripened stem. Daniel Deronda Nelly Moser, The President. Any pruning do in early spring before new growth begins just remove dead wood and cut back healthy wood to just above the new forming leaf buds. This group of clematis sometimes produce flowers again in the summer as well as spring.

Group 3 these are late flowering jackmani and gipsy queen.
These flowers come from the current seasons growth so they need to be pruned in the early spring before new growth begins.

Clematis plants are available in most garden centres or you can always try and root a cutting. Take a cutting in spring and dab in some rooting hormone. I have not tried this but I might just do so this year I love getting plants from nothing.

Thank you for reading , enjoy your garden Mary

I know it's a long shot since it's not exactly a normal plant that you would have lying around, but I'm completely incompetent when it comes to horticulture and was wondering if you know how to grow venus fly traps?! I have one and planted it a couple of weeks ago, I've been watering it with sterilised water and it's still not popped up yet! :(
