Cress,

What plant do you think of when I say cress do you think of curled cress that you get served with a salad, or in an egg sandwich.
Do you think of watercress a helping of watercress is often served as a side salad with a meal?
There are many other cress plants, pennycress, hairy bitter cress, hairy rock cress, mouse ear cress, these are really weeds and can be a problem agriculturally.

I suggested this category as I was thinking of growing cress in eggshells for Easter with the children
I will tell you about this sort of cress. Curled cress is easy to buy and grow any time of the year. You can buy it ready grown in supermarkets usually comes in a small plastic container still growing.

Seeds for cress are easy to buy many seed merchants offer them you can buy seeds in supermarkets or garden shops and centres. The seed is not very expensive around the pound mark depending on suppliers.

Cress is so easy to grow thats why so many children will grow it as a project.

You can grow your cress on a saucer in an egg tray, or an eggshell, if you use a tray you can write your name in cress.
All you need to do is choose your container put some flannel, cotton wool, and kitchen towel, something that will absorb water in the container. Then lightly sprinkle cress seeds on the fabric and water. Keep it wet and in a sunny place. In a couple of days it will germinate and in 10-14 days will be big enough to cut and eat. After growing cress you cam make egg and cress sandwiches.
There are lots of ideas on web for novel ways to grow cress one site is http://www.bigeyedowl.co.uk/activities-growing.htm .

Growing cress with children is good its easy and starts them learning about growing things . grow one add water another without water which one grows?

Watercress. Watercress is a dark leaved leafy plant that has a bitter taste I do not like it much. It grows in running streams and brooks. If you wish to try and grow this http://www.buckingham-nurseries.co.uk/acatalog/pro duct_19269.html have seeds and suggest you can grow it in a saucer of water,
Watercress contains lots of vit C and iron so its good for you.

The wild weed cresses are not suitable for eating the pennycress if eaten by cows will taint the milk.
If you get hairy bitter cress in your garden pull it out quick before it seeds or you will get it everywhere the 100s of seeds it produces spread and germinate easily. (Actually I think its a pretty little plant)
Thanks for reading about cress, have fun growing some with your children and enjoy your cress sandwiches.

Summary: Cress lots of different kinds .
